Abstract: In this paper, we wrote a formal letter of introduction to the professor in which we shared our background information and story along with our interest in science, our knowledge of it, why we want to pursue it, etc. We also used this paper to reflect on science, scientific communication and how it affects us and the world. The paper concludes with my goals for this semester and the things I plan to work on.

Formal Letter of Introduction
Dear Professor Coppola,
I would like to introduce myself as your student for this Fall semester. My name is Salsabil Taleb and I am eighteen years old starting my sophomore year in City College. My major is currently undeclared, but my intended major is biology. I usually spend my free time with my family and friends, do some cooking and cleaning and take naps. Like a lot of people, I am an immigrant and I moved to the United States when I was five years old. The main reason for coming was to get a proper education and lead a successful life. Because of this, school is very important to me and so is finding the right career. Ever since I was young, a part of me knew I wanted to do something in the medical field because I’ve always had the tendency to help people and every time, I had a doctor’s appointment I was super fascinated by how everything functioned. But a part of me also knew that another reason I’m more focused on this subject is because of my father enforcing a career based on medicine and growing up around family members that verbalize the importance of pursuing a career that is science-related and in the medical field. I haven’t yet figured out what exactly I want to do in medicine, and it’s been quite stressful for me because I feel like I’m running out of time and because everyone else seems to have their future planned out but I hope it’s a career my parents approve of because their approval is very important to me as I know they want the best for me. I really hope to find out soon as I gradually move forward in the upcoming years.
I’m very interested in science as it has an influence on most aspects of our lives. It can be defined in many ways and utilized every single day not only in our daily lives but in our future careers. We probably don’t think much when we’re eating, taking medicine, making phone calls, using transportation, etc., but all of this is possible because of science which consists of many hidden trial and error and lots of experiments. I find it very interesting and it makes me want to learn more every day since it is such a broad subject. I remember in elementary school, every year we used to have a science fair, where all the students had to do an experiment of their choice and present it to the class. The students who impress our science teacher the most would get to put their presentation up in the science fair for everyone to see. I decided to do an experiment where I tracked the growth of two plants. One was watered with water (obviously) and the other was “watered” with milk. Turns out the plant with water thrived and grew much quicker than the one used with milk. It was exciting to see my plants grow and to record the progress they were making. My science teacher loved it and I got to be in the science fair! I felt super proud and I felt generous enough to give both of my plants to two students in our class.
Science depends on putting new ideas to the test and accumulating it into solid facts that can be significantly important to our health and our environment. It has had a major influence on us and continues to impact our world today. The information we get from scientific experiments is very useful to us and helps us to develop new technological advancements and allows us to make important, well-informed decisions that we wouldn’t have been able to make without it. Science has made life easier for mankind to lead a healthy, educated and advanced life. Science is rapidly improving, changing, growing every day and I want to be a part of that movement.
By taking this class I aspire to improve on my writing, get back on reading regularly and broaden my use of vocabulary all while learning more about science. I also hope that this semester, I improve on my math skills since I suck terribly at it and also work on being more productive with my time and procrastinate less. I hope this letter gave you a more in-depth view of my understanding of science, why I’m so interested in it and how I want to combine that into my future career path.
Sincerely,
Salsabil Taleb
